Ricoh Europe B.V. Semiconductor Support Centre has launched a range of new CMOS-based products designed for the automotive market. The new products expand the company’s portfolio for automotive power management ICs and offer a range of features to help vehicle manufacturers continue to innovate in design, safety and features. Ricoh has brought to the market two new low-supply current LDOs, the R1517 and R1518; a new step down DC/DC converter, the; and R1270S a new application processor supervisory IC, the R5110S.
The R1517 and R1518 feature a wide input voltage range and a low supply current and are designed for use as a power source for car accessories, general car equipment and car safety critical applications (R8354 & R8355). Low supply current is an important feature for specific automotive applications, in particular for those that are active when the vehicle is not in use, such as the keyless entry and security systems. The continuously increasing integration of electronic applications in modern cars results in a higher current consumption and to provide a long battery stand-by, the current consumption of all applications needs to be minimized. The R1517 and R1518 contribute to a lower current consumption with a supply current of only 18µA.
The R1517 and R1518 feature an excellent output voltage accuracy of 0.8% and a low temperature drift coefficient of only 60ppm/°C, making the products a highly reliable power source. The R1517 and R1518 are available in a space saving HSOP-6J package and in a high wattage TO-252-5-P2 package. They can survive in harsh conditions, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, operate up to 36V and can tolerate load dump surge peak voltages up to 60V with duration of less than 200ms.
The R1270S is a current mode operating, step down DC/DC converter that offers fast transient response and high efficiency performance. It has an embedded N-channel high side driver transistor and the on-resistance of the driver transistor is only 100mΩ and provides up to 3A output current. The R1270 has a wide input voltage range up to 34V which makes it suitable to use in a large variety of applications. The product is available in an automotive grade (AEC-Q100 certified) and a consumer grade version. The internal oscillator frequency is adjustable in a range from 300kHz to 2400kHz by an external resistor but it is also possible to synchronize the DC/DC converter by using an external sync signal. Phase compensation is adjustable by using an external resistor and capacitor to optimise the performance of the inductor and the output capacitor. To improve efficiency performance under light load conditions, the R1270 is able to switch automatically from PWM to VFM mode, when preferred it is also possible to set the IC to a fixed PWM mode.
For added protection, the R1270 has a number of embedded safety circuits including an adjustable cycle by cycle current limit protection to control the maximum inductor peak current and a fold-back short circuit protection, lowering the oscillator frequency to 50% if a short circuit occurs on the output pin. An optional latch circuit turns the output off when the short current limit threshold is exceeded. There is also thermal protection and Under Voltage Lock Out and Over Voltage Lock Out protection. A fault signal shows if these safety circuits are active or if the IC is not ready for normal operation. In addition, an internal soft start circuit boots the IC in 0.4ms but is adjustable when connecting an external capacitor.
