Ricoh Europe (Netherlands) B.V. Semiconductor Support Centre has launched three advanced Power Management Unit (PMU) ICs; RN5T567, RN5T618 and RC5T619, which are used as a single, cost-effective complex power supply for application processors, MCUs, FPGAs and system-level peripherals.
The easiest way to build an efficient power management system for a battery-powered portable application is to use an IC that combines all power control functions into a single chip, namely a PMU or also known as a PMIC. Often such a complex power supply with discrete components is not very efficient and cost increasing.
Ricoh’s RN5T567, RN5T618 and RC5T619 seamlessly manage the power flow from various power sources like wall adapters, USB and batteries, in order to provide power to the circuits and to charge the battery. The PMU devices have programmable features for start-up sequencing and voltage setting by OTP, while controlled by a 2 wire I2C bus interface operating at 400kHz or 3.2MHz.
Depending on the PMU product, the IC contains an array of power management circuits:
- 3 to 5 high efficiency step-down DC/DC converters with DVS
- 5 to 12 LDO regulators
- Real Time Clock
- 4 or 5 channel GPIO
- 12bit Analogue to Digital Converter
- Lithium-Ion battery charger
- PowerPath selection
- 12bit Fuel Gauge
Ricoh’s PMU ICs are designed to use as power supplies for ARM® Cortex processors, GPS/PND devices, industrial computer module boards, and set-top box devices. In addition, these ICs can be found for example in hand terminal devices, mobile phones, and tablets.
Due to the small QFN0606-48, CSP0608-80 or CSP0606-84 packages, the PMU ICs are convenient to mount on high density circuit boards.
Ricoh provides technical support for development, by means of software drivers, PMU evaluation board, operation manual and application notes.
As a leading PMU IC supplier and manufacturer, Ricoh has been developing mixed signal PMU ICs for over 10 years for high-end mobile phones, making great contributions to save power consumption and circuit board space.
