Ricoh Europe (Netherlands) B.V. Semiconductor Support Centre has launched a new PWM/VFM Buck-Boost DC/DC Converter RP602 with Synchronous Rectifier. The new product is a powerful solution that requires only a small footprint and small external components on the circuit board.
The RP602 is designed to operate as a boost as well as a buck DC/DC Converter. It is especially convenient in case of a required output voltage of in between the maximum and minimum battery voltage level. When the battery is fully charged, it has to lower the voltage (buck) and when the battery is nearly discharged, it has to increase the battery voltage (boost). The RP602 switches automatically between the DC/DC Converter topologies.
A compact solution embedded into a Wafer Level Chip Scaled Package, the RP602 occupies only 3.92mm2 of circuit board space. This contributes to the product efficiency when used on high density and small circuit boards in portable gadget applications, such as smartphones and smartwatches. The RP602 can also be used as power source for (Li-ion) battery operated equipment, as well as IoT devices and communication modules. Other factors contributing to circuit board space reduction are the high operating frequency of 2.6MHz (resulting in the use of a small sized inductor of 1.0µH), an embedded driver transistor and synchronous rectification, which eliminates the need of an external diode.
The RP602 has two operating modes, selected by a mode pin:
- Forced PWM operating mode; the DC/DC converter switches at a fixed frequency rate, which has a lower output noise versus VFM operating mode.
- PWM/VFM auto switching mode; the DC/DC Converter switches between PWM and VFM mode automatically, resulting in the best efficiency level at either low or high output current demand.
In terms of circuit protection, various circuits are embedded to ensure a safe operation of the power supply. An under voltage lockout function (UVLO) disables the RP602 if the input voltage is below the threshold of the minimum operating voltage. An over-current limit circuit protects the DC/DC Converter and other electronic parts of the application from damage caused by excessive heat, in either optional latched or reset type current limit. The internal thermal shutdown circuit disables the RP602 as soon as the junction temperature reaches 150°C and releases the protection circuit at 110°C.
The embedded soft-start function boots the internal circuits in 1ms. The output voltage version is internally fixed by the factory and can be set in a range from 2.7V to 4.2V by using a laser trimming process. An optional auto-discharge function discharges the output capacitor quickly when the RP602 is disabled by the CE pin; an embedded transistor connected at the Vout pin is turned on and shorts the capacitor to ground.
